Road Trip
We took a road trip today. Since it was only 18 degrees outside with a windchill of about 1, we thought it would be a good day to drive around the state!
We headed for Madison from LaCrosse on Hwy 14. It started snowing about the time we left LaCrosse. It snowed almost all day, but it was only flurries, just enough to make they air shimmer.
Along Highway 14, which is also known as the Frank Lloyd Wright Memorial Highway, we passed the turn for the House on the Rock, but we passed it by today. That is something to see when the sun is shining and it is warm out.
We drove into Madison and took a tour around Mendota Lake. We started at the Capitol Building, drove into the University of Wisconsin campus (Go Badgers!) and then on around Lake Mendota.
We drove around Lake Mendota and headed north towards Baraboo. On the way to Baraboo, we got a pleasant surprise when we found that we had to cross the Wisconsin River on a ferry!!
The Merrimac Free Ferry
was a lot of fun. Even though it was too cold to get out of the car, we were right next to the rail and could see the waves and the ice on the river. It was the first time Meg had ever been on a ferry. It had been a really long time since I had been on one.
The trip across the river was very short - only lasted about 3-4 minutes, but it was fun.
From there, we headed north to Baraboo, past the Ho-Chunk Nation Casino and hit I-90/I-94 and then home.
We were gone for about 6-7 hours and it was thoroughly worth it to get away from the house for a day after this horrible week.
