Good Grief
Thank you, Rivrdog, for saying what I have been thinking all along.
Complete Dunderheads.
Update: Okay, so I went onto the Climbers forum at KGW.com and found these guys are not dunderheads. They made the summit as planned while the weather was still good. They knew there was a storm coming and did not plan to be up there more than a day, possibly one night.
But after they reached the summit, the one in the snow cave got hurt, or was too exhausted to continue. The other two started down the mountain to get help.
Now they are all lost.
They are experienced climbers and had gone well prepared for the climb and the weather. While they still shouldn't have been up there in December, they do know what they are doing in bad situations.
I hope they all come out okay.

The total length of the climb and trek that they attempted would have made for a momentous accomplishment in summer. It's far too much to envision in winter.
Two guys from TX and one from New Yawk, how much practice do they actually get?
Bad case of biting off much more than they could chew, but then, I found out that such is the case with most who get into trouble in the winter.
My stint with the Marquette Co, MI SSAR team was an eye-opener for me. We were taught to try to get into the heads of the people we were searching for, so as to narrow the search.
That would have been very difficult in this case, as they were literally reaching for the stars.
